Knight visitor

Benny watched the last of her credit tick away on the readout in the public-access booth at the spaceport. It was raining outside – it was always raining outside – as she stared unseeing through the large window and across the levelled landscape of Dellah. The sun was inching its way down over the brown tops of the university buildings, reflecting off the glass of the Theatrology complex and drenching the tall needle of the control tower. The rain, meanwhile, was drenching the spaceport workers as they readied a shuttle just outside.

Braxiatel was not answering, so she accepted the mail system’s husky suggestion that she leave him a message. She kept it short to make sure he got it: ‘Hi, it’s Benny. I’m back. Call me.’

If her credit ran out she was not sure what would happen to it. It might get erased, which would be bad enough. Worse still, they might want Braxiatel to pay for it, which would not reflect well on Benny at a time when she was counting on his help and advice more than ever.

It occurred to Benny on her way back to her rooms that Braxiatel might be away. This did little to cheer her up. She had been forced to accept a ride with Gilder back to the Archaeology Department, since she could not afford any other means of travel and it was too far to walk. Having listened to his oily explanations of how much he was helping to organize the university on the long shuttle journey, she reckoned she could cope with an hour skimming through the rain between islands. If he thought he was doing her a favour, and that she was diligently going to check her mail and messages at the department, that was his problem. One thing she definitely did not want was Gilder’s financial advice, however good it might actually be. So she could not admit her lack of funds, and played along with his workaholic fantasy. They rode in the lift together to the third floor where Benny’s office and seminar room was located, and she made a great show of heading towards it. Gilder continued in the lift.

It was quite late in the evening by now, and the place was deserted. Having got this far, Benny did indeed check her messages, not least to allow the rain time to abate. She had only two messages of any interest aside from the usual department notices and reminders. One was a final demand for payment, and the other a circular to everyone on a list of people interested in the feeding habits of Mitsushan Quantoctresses which Benny had been put on by mistake. She hoped.

By the time Benny had finished, the rain had got worse. She made her way back to the main entrance, finding some little comfort in the memory that her bicycle was still parked outside and some little solace in the fact that it did not appear to have been stolen or vandalized.
